Mill Farm started clay shooting in 1971, originally for the local tenant farmers and game keepers on The Leconfield Estate. It became a well know open shoot held on the first Sunday of the month. This format has continued through until now with the addition of a charity shoot each year and a Christmas shoot, with an average attendance of 130 people on an open Sunday morning shoot. Shooting on these days starts at 10am with last entries at 12.30pm. We always ask shooters to use fibre wads as we graze areas with sheep. Fibre wad cartridges in 12 gauge and 20 gauge are always available. We recycle all our empty cartridges with a company who specialise in farm waste recycling. We always provide refreshments and hot sausages in a roll, with the sausages been produced from the farms’ own tradition woodland pork. The farm is over 300 acres with a 12 acre lake, woodland, marsh land, rolling grassland and arable.
The farm was taken over from the 29th September 2009 by Andrew and Jenny Loughan, with the view of making the farm more diverse commercially and environmentally. The farm livestock is sold direct to customers either in the form of boxed lamb or boxed pork.
Simulated Game Shooting (SGS) was introduced to help maximise the shooting potential of the farm without shooting live quarry. A SGS day consists of a breakfast on arrival, safety briefing and then a short walk or drive to the first stand. We normally cater for parties of up to 18 people at a time, with 6 guns standing at any one time. They may have 6 loading and the further group of 6 socialising. Once all three parties have shot, it is off to the next stand ready to do battle again. After the second drive we stop for more refreshments before proceeding to the last drive before lunch. A very welcoming local pub is used for an excellent roast followed by a desert before coming back to the farm for the last remaining two drives of the day. After the last drive it is then a case of leaving with warm barrels, fond memories and a slightly sore shoulder.
A quote from a couple of past SGS at Mill Farm
_"Good afternoon Andrew,
Just a note to thank you for putting on such a great day for us all yesterday.
This was, after many years of shooting, something that I had always wanted to have a go at and can honestly say that I was not disappointed. Very well organized, relaxed and friendly bunch of guys and a great lunch, what more could one ask for? (Other than to turn Ian down a notch or two)!
Please pass on our thanks to your team of helpers and of course, Jenny."
All the best,
Andy_
